How about since we have Jim and Jim II already, we make a game of it?
Correctly guess what the plant in the photo is, and you get to post the next photo. You do have to know what it is you are posting, though... ;)
How about this one to start us off???

neetanddave

No, sorry. How about clues? It's used in floral arrangements quite often, comes in white or purple, and grows from corms...
LokisMum

Well, shucks! I have the twin of that growing in my garden, and it's called angel's mist according to the plant tag that came with it!

I've never heard it called "angel's mist", and I know the name is not angelonia. Let me do some research on "angel's mist."

Lady in the Bath, LMAO!!! Here's why they call it that: If you take one of the blooms, hold it with 2 fingers at the bottom of the bloom on each side. When you pull them outward, spreading the two sides of the bloom, the stamens looks like a lady, with her two arms downward and her head a bit orange colored. As you unfold it, she stands there and the tub is the bloom at the bottom, opened up. (Kids love that, I do it all the time.)
Steve

Here's another picturte of the plant I put up. The blooms have not come out yet (because of pruning) on the one I posted. Here is what those blooms look like:

dang, I am so sorry to have left on that note. I went to Tuscon for a week to visit a friend and missed the forum completely. The computer there was, ahem, a challenge. The plant's name is Gaura. It is just gorgeous, a sun-loving plant which spreads to 4 feet across, just riddled with blooms all summer long. In the fall, you can take the stems of flowers and hang them upside down to get a long (3'!) stem of an incredibly bright crimson, perfect for dry flower arrangements.

I looked up pompass grass - not the same thing! Some of it looks very similar though. Pompass grass seems to be a southern thing. This is a northern grass, but I'll give it to you. After all, grass is grass, isn't it? This is actually maiden grass or miscanthus sinensis! This particular variety is called Huron Sunrise!

maggiesgranny
12-08-2006, 02:26 PM
Looks like a Crocus to me:lolup:
NO but since this thread has seemed to die I will tell you what it is.
Colchicum is a genus of flowering plants containing around sixty species of perennials which grow from corms. It is a member of family Colchicaceae, and is native to West Asia and part of the Mediterranean coast.
Colchicum autumnale, commonly called "autumn crocus" or "naked ladies", is the best known species. It produces purple, pink or white flowers resembling those of the crocus which appear from September to October in its native latitudes. It forms a rosette of dark green leaves, but only after flowering.
Several other species, such as C. speciosum, C. album, C. corsicum and C. agrippinum, are grown for their flowers.
Its leaves, corm and seeds are poisonous, containing the alkaloid colchicine. Its roots and seeds have long been considered to have valuable medicinal properties deriving from the use of small doses of this drug, such as to treat gout.
In this genus the ovary of the flower is underground. As a consequence, the styles are extremely long in proportion, often more than 10cm.
In the UK, the National Collection of Cochicums is maintained at Felbrigg Hall, Norfolk.
LokisMum
12-08-2006, 02:33 PM

:spray: Ok you guys are just a barrel of laughs!
This "tree" or "bush" (it can be both) blooms in the late spring, early summer with flowers at the end of the branch. You can have lilac, white or pink flowers. Some gardeners don't believe in pruning the branches back but I like to prune it back in the early spring.
Oh one more hint it's two words and the second word isn't tree or bush.
One other little tid bit of info ignore the squirrel and feeder.

Hey everyone...:wave2:
I do love to garden...but as far as being 'serious' anything...well...as it was said about Goldie Hawn back in the dark ages...'if you opened up her head and looked inside, you'd probably find flowers!':SmilieDaisy:....welp, that's me in a nutshell!
Anyway, I have been gardening for a long, long time so I guess that's why I was lucky in the guess. If you'd like to see some of my flowers, why not stop over at TheCatSite...a gardener posted a thread called ''Anyone Like Flowers?'' (I think that's what its called, I might be wrong)...I've posted many of my plantings there. In fact, that's where LokisMum & neetanddave asked me to check out VF! Glad I did!
I've been thinking about what flower to post here next if I happen to guess correctly. Think I'm almost ready but I'll have to find a good pic of it...
.....I'll Be Back!....
