I decided over the winter that it would be nice to have some rain barrels to collect rain so I wouldn't have to use tap water. Instead of spending 60+ dollars each plus shipping, I build my own tandem barrel system for around $100. I used barrels from where I work (they contained powdered aluminum previously), coated them with rubberized coating (do-it-yourself bedliner for pickuptrucks), and jury-rigged various plumbing fittings.

That looks very professional. Are water very expensive where you live? Also, what about the temperature? If we were to do that here, I think all of the water would evaporate on a day as hot as today... I poured some water on the lawn here and 10 minutes later it was all dry!

The spot where the barrels are located will get several hours of mid to late afternoon sun. In Ohio, we have lots of humidity, so I don't think the water will evaporate too quickly. Also, there are thunderstorms here about every week or every two weeks to replenish the rain barrels. I didn't want to use tap water because the tap is much farther away and I am lazy and also the tap water isn't free and it contains chemicals.

An interesting link for advice regarding the very true wisdom of capturing and storing rain water. It also gives reasons why this heretofore considered big and easy resoiurce is becoming less available.

Melissa is right in doing that, big time. She is ahead of the curve, in fact. Water will be the next oil, in the end.

Sounds like the prefect setting for it then. We should conserve more water where I live, but such a project simply wouldn't work in this dry hot summer we have here :(
