View Full Version : Show us your Not-So-Good Gardens!
After seeing everyone's beautiful gardens, I thought it would be fun to see our not-so-good gardens and gardening disasters! ;)
I'll get some pictures in a little while - when I get chance to nip into the garden - of my poor battered garden! :lol2:
So, let's see your gardening disasters and your experiments that went wrong! :lol2:

Man, I'm not sure I can do this, lol.
:lol2: Oh but Steve, yes you can! :lol2:
I was about to go and take some picture, but the wind and rain have picked up, so I'll wait for the further damage to be done! ;)

Listen, I am travelling for a week. Class Reunion, lol, in Kentucky. My Mother lives in Lousiville as well and always great to see her. Not sure if I can get back as often as I do now, but I just want to say I love the site so far and the many wonderful pictures, members and contributors. This is already becoming a labor of love and I thank everyone. Peace.

By the way, I'll post some pics once my digital camera arrives (on back-order till September). I only hope my gardens are still nice by then! I heard this am on the radio that the leaves are already starting to turn up north.

Just wanted to welcome Laureen here! Welcome to VF! Hope to read more about you in the introductions thread :)

Man, this thread went to Hell in a handbasket, lol. Had I not experimented so with "squiffiness", perhaps we could have rescued it.
Here's what I think. Lareen has few excuses, coming up, for not going to work on her place, lol. Nor Anne, who has male help in plentitude, lol. I suggest we begin with her and Anne, or either, and let's see what we think, for real. We can all suggest items to plant and things. This does not hardly have to be quick. And I believe no one is hurrying anyway. I was just thinking, with everywhere else facing the colder times, maybe Texas and Israel might be Mediterranean enough to have fun with. We could begin at the entrances. Laureen? Annette?
Oh, and, good news, I have beer already!:blobyellow:

LMAO!! Yes, you were right. Whoever called these people smart was smart!
That might help! Do you have one?????/
No, but I'm sure I could use a little femal persuasion to get Oxford to print some for us! ;) :lol2:
Steve, I agree that we should start with Anne and Laureen - maybe we could start separate threads for ideas for them - with the pictures and all!

I thought I would let you all know, Neet came to my house for New Years Day dinner, we had a lovely time but she made fun of my empty flower boxes and said she should post pictures of them on here. Can someone tell me what do you do with flower boxes when the flowers die and its winter? Am I supposed to hide them? Plant some kind of winter flowers? add soil, mulch what???????? I know my rose bushes need to be cut down in the winter and my mums too once they have bloomed but these are just plain ole summer flower boxes with pansies and petunias and gerber daisies.:sunk: someone help!!!

See, I was nice and didn't mention it.... :D
I usually pull out my annuals, add them to the compost pile, and dump the dirt in as well. I clean up the boxes and store them during the winter so they don't get ruined.
Since we can't really grow anything here in winter... not much help from me...

Annuals are the ones that grow, flower and finish in one year, but you can collect seeds off them to grow next year.

Don't feel bad I leave my empty flower boxes empty during the winter as well.

Can someone tell me what do you do with flower boxes when the flowers die and its winter?
When I used to live in the UK I had two boxes on my window sill. I hated them when they were empty in the winter months............so heres what I used to do
1/ heathers are wonderful winter plants, you can lots of colours, so you can do a pattern, you know, white, pink, white etc
2/ get those mini conifers from the DIY places - only about 6-8in tall, depending on the size of your box, you need odd numbers so 3, 5 or 7 trees. One year I spotted some in a garden centre and they were sprayed with the fake snow stuff, so they were great fun. You can even put some decorations on during the holidays. When you want to re-do your boxes, these can then be planted in your garden and grow bigger.
3/ Make a creation with small branches and twigs, I sprayed mine silver, you can also hang things on these during the holidays. I had a taller one in the middle and then the other branches stepped down in size.
4/ Can you grow snow-drops were you live, they are so cheerful during the winter
5/ Hollies are also another good one, you can mix the varieties or have all one type. I did a dark green one in the middle, with 2 varigated at each side - it looked lovely
Hope that helps - do let us know what you do ?? :flower: :flower: :flower:

Personally I do what Neet does! Mine get emptied and put away for the winter - they're just on the deck anyway, which we don't use when there is 4 feet of snow on it!

I was just gonna add some more dirt cause they never did get enough when I planted them and see what comes back. I know Gerber daisies come back every year I had some at my old house. I was hoping the pansies would come back too. <sigh> I am not good at this gardening stuff!:shame:

I used to put greens (pine, etc) in my window boxes for the holidays, along with some small clear lights and painted white and gold sticks. I pulled out the sticks and lights and would leave the greens in for the rest of the winter. :)

Laureen...
How on earth did I miss that! Well, your oak tree doesn't look too bad to me...actually, everything just looks like it needs a good watering...and a mowing! Actually, looking over many of your pics, I was reminded of how many or most of the yards look in South Texas (where I was born and raised) about August...the middle of the Dog Days. Everything looks pretty much like what's in your pics. Are these recent photos?
(( I'm adding this on after having looked around a bit more...Laureen, I didn't see yours cuz its not in this thread...you made your own not-so-good-garden thread. Looks like several people have done that too. Sorry I missed it.....(s'hard when you're the new kid around)...:sulkoff: ))
