View Full Version : Identifying plant!
I'm not sure if this is the right place to post this, sorry if it's not!
I bought a bag of plants from the market a while ago and it contained this plant and I have no idea what it is!

It appears to be doing quite well with partial shade in the morning and full sun for the majority of the day.
Can anyone help me to identify it please? I'd like it to have a real name as I don't think 'Jim' suits it! ;)

Good Lord, what a gorgeous plant. Frankly, I can't tell you either, duh. Gosh, it is spectacular though. I hope someone ID's it. For now, "Jim" is one hot specimen.
It is very pretty indeed. Could you maybe take a piece and ask at the place where you bought it from? If they're not around anymore, maybe try local nurseries? And don't forget to come back and tell us ;)
*Jim Blushes* ;)
"Jim" really is a beautiful and unusual plant!
Anne, the market is a Continental one that visits from time to time, so sadly I'm not sure I could catch them again! This makes me wonder if it's a European plant?
Thank you for the idea of taking it to a Nursery, I really hadn't though of that! I will definitely give it a try and come back to let you know "Jim's" real name! :)

So "Jim" is a :blushing: shy but :dazzler: thing, lol. I wanted to mention, there are any number of resources for the enterprising gardener who needs information on subjects of all kinds related to horticulture. Here in Reno, I often ask questions at the University of Nevada Horticultural Department. They are surprisngly informative and forthcoming, I once expected some distance or exasperation that I would ask them stuff, but it turns out they are delighted to reach out and help regular folks like us. Just a thought. Sometimes there are questions which are unusual or beyond the normal ken of landscapers or nurserymen. These places have been a resource for me, more than once! Also, some City or County Garden (or Parks?) Departments are another possible resource.

I'd love to know what it is so I can get one! I need a Jim ;) Is it an annual or perennial?

Yes he is! :lol2: Gosh, I hadn't thought about asking at the university or somewhere like that! I'll think I'll be all over the place with 'Jim'!! :lol2:

Oh yes, it would be great if you could get a 'Jim' too! :) You know, Karen, I have no idea whether he is annual or perenial!! He just came in a bag with some lavendar, a lilly and an Astilbe (sp?) :lol2:

I had my mom look at the picture and she says its a Sedum. She isn't sure of the variety but she is positive its a Sedum!

yes it does look like some sort of sedum. I have something like that in my rock garden along with some Hens and Chicks. Once they start to blossom they stand sort of upright with pretty flowers at the end. Mine is flowering now. Wished I could remember the name of it.

Of course the only name that came with Jim II was "succulent" !

Frankly, and I will be the forst to admit it, I have not run across an answer to Jim yet. He sure is drop dead gorgeous, tho. I bet this one came with a tag, right?

Did it say anything else? Sun or shade? How big does it get? It looks very interesting - wouldn't mind trying it out!

Jim might get very upset if she doesn't!

Did you find out if Jim is an annual, or perennial? Is he still alive?

Yes - let's have a Jim update!
The last time I had a 'one to one' with Jim (while pulling out my Summer annuals) he was fighting fit! I can't really see him from the kitchen and it's been so wet and dark lately that I haven't had chance to go and have a chat with him!
I will definitely try to get out there before Christmas so I can give you all an update! :)
If he's not doing well, he will be potted up and transported for a holiday in my Mum's heated greenhouse! :lol2: We can't lose Jim now! :lol2:

Whew! I was worried that when the weather got colder, you lost Jim!
